Nursing in Canada with a GNM diploma.
GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) is a nursing diploma from India, not a degree. With it, the direct route in Canada is practical nursing. In Ontario you apply to CNO as a Registered Practical Nurse and write the REx-PN. In Alberta and Newfoundland and Labrador you apply as a Licensed Practical Nurse and write the CPNRE. Ontario says a diploma that lets you work as an RN at home does not meet its RN requirement, while Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia assess diploma nurses for RN registration case by case.
Is GNM a diploma or a degree?
GNM is a diploma. In India the nursing degree is the 4-year BSc nursing, and a GNM nurse can upgrade to a degree through the 2-year post-basic BSc nursing. Canadian regulators make the same distinction: a diploma usually leads to practical nursing (RPN or LPN), and a degree to registered nursing (RN), though a few provinces register diploma nurses as RNs.
To see which routes fit your own graduation year and work hours, use the nursing pathway checker. It takes about 2 minutes.
Can a GNM nurse become an RN in Canada?
Not directly in Ontario. CNO asks RN applicants for a baccalaureate nursing degree, and says a nursing diploma that lets you practise as an RN in your home country does not meet that requirement. It points those applicants to an RPN application instead, where the minimum is a practical nursing diploma.
Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia assess each application case by case. If you meet their criteria, you can register as an RN in either province, and an RN licence can later be transferred to another province. Newfoundland and Labrador lists India among the countries whose entry-level nursing education meets its RN education requirement, and your credential assessment sets whether your education counts as diploma or degree level in Canada. For the documents and the exam from India, see nursing in Canada from India.
Whether you meet the criteria depends on your own education and practice, so book a profile assessment call before you pay for anything. Compare the provinces.
Which provinces have a practical nurse route?
These three publish their requirements for internationally educated nurses in detail. Each regulator assesses your education itself.

How does a GNM nurse become an RPN in Ontario?
- Get a credential assessment from WES, ICAS or ICES, or an NNAS Expedited report. Compare the options.
- Apply to CNO as an RPN. If CNO finds your education substantially equivalent, you can book the REx-PN.
- Pass the REx-PN. It has 90 to 150 questions, a 4-hour limit and costs $350 CAD: see the REx-PN exam, explained.
- Meet the remaining requirements, the same list RN applicants follow: recent paid practice, English or French, the jurisprudence exam, Transition to Practice, the right to work, and conduct and health.
If your practice is more than three years old, CNO's Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP) is open to RPN applicants too: at least 140 hours of supervised practice in Ontario, as long as your practice expired no more than five years before you apply. RPN applicants can be supervised by an RPN, RN or NP.
How does a GNM nurse become an LPN in Alberta?
You apply to CLHA with a credential assessment or NNAS report, a verification of registration from the last six months, and proof of 1,000 practice hours in the past four years, or graduation in that time. Your employer confirms the hours on CLHA's verification of employment form. CLHA may refer you to an in-person clinical exam (OSCE) if it cannot finish the assessment from your documents.
Once CLHA approves you to write the CPNRE, provisional registration lets you work as a nurse under supervision while you wait. You can extend it to a maximum of one year from the date it was issued. Pass the CPNRE and you move to the general register automatically. CLHA allows 4 attempts at the exam.
How does a GNM nurse become an LPN in Newfoundland and Labrador?
The province's RN and LPN colleges merged into the NL College of Nurses on 15 April 2026. For LPN applicants, entry-level RN education from Australia, Ghana, Hong Kong, Ireland, India, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines or the UK meets the education requirement, with no competency assessment. Your credential assessment must reach the College before you apply.
You also need recent practice: graduation in the last 3 years, or 1,125 hours as an LPN or RN in the last 5 years, or 450 hours in the last 2, or a re-entry program in the last 3 years. The College decides within 30 business days of a complete application. Approved applicants are invited to write the CPNRE and can get a 4-month temporary licence if they have a potential LPN job in the province. If your practice is not recent, the College may offer a temporary licence for supervised practice with a local employer, or ask you to complete its LPN re-entry program.

FAQ
What else do nurses ask?
Is GNM a diploma or a degree?
GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) is a nursing diploma. The nursing degree in India is the 4-year BSc nursing, and a GNM nurse can upgrade through the 2-year post-basic BSc nursing. In Canada a diploma usually leads to practical nursing (RPN or LPN), and a degree to registered nursing (RN).
Is a GNM diploma accepted in Canada?
Each provincial regulator assesses your education itself. Ontario says a nursing diploma that lets you work as an RN at home does not meet its RN requirement, but you may be able to apply as an RPN. Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia assess applications case by case: if you meet their criteria, you can become an RN there, and the licence can later be transferred to another province. Book a call with Focused Nursing Prep Classes to check whether you meet the criteria.
Do I need NNAS with a GNM diploma?
No, not in Ontario, Alberta or Newfoundland and Labrador. Ontario takes an assessment from WES, ICAS or ICES, or an NNAS Expedited report. Alberta takes a credential assessment or an NNAS report, and Newfoundland and Labrador lists NNAS as one of six options.
Can I work while I wait to write the CPNRE?
In Alberta, provisional registration lets CLHA-approved applicants work under supervision until they write the CPNRE, for up to one year. In Newfoundland and Labrador, a 4-month temporary licence is possible if you have a potential LPN job there.
